Timeline to a Legend
All societies, including our own, tell stories of how their world began. Such stories are almost infinitely varied in detail, but they tend to include some similarity along the way. Alas, this is a story, like many others you have ever heard; for it begins in a time long, long ago…
To begin our story, “Unto Britannia” timeline looks at the events in Britannia from the time the Romans first invaded it, thru the aftermath of the departure of Roman troops from Britannia, and into the realm of King Arthur and his Knights.
55 BC - Julius Caesar's first invasion of Britannia
54 BC - Julius Caesar's Second invasion of Britannia
34 BC - Sarmatians came into direct contact with Rome through Mithridates VI of Pontus. In the employ of the Pontic King, the Sarmatians helped bring Asia Minor under his rule, and began wreaking havoc in Greece and the Balkans, at the expense of Rome.
5 AD - Rome acknowledges Cymbeline, king of Britannia
43 AD - Under Emperor Claudius, Romans invades deep into central Britannia. Caratacus, chieftain of the Catuvellauni tribe, leads the resistance
51 AD - Caratacus is defeated, captured, and taken to Rome
61 AD – Rome drives deeper into southern Britannia. Boudicca, Queen of the Iceni, rebels against Roman governance, but is defeated
63 AD - Joseph of Arimathea's Christianity mission to Glastonbury.
75-80 AD - Gnaeus Julius Agricola invades Britannia. Rome's conquest of Britannia is complete: Agricola is Britannia's Imperial Governor
102 to 106 AD - The Sarmatians, had settled in Dacia years before; but the Roman Emperor Trajan led a massive campaign to conquer Dacia, eventually bringing the region and the Sarmatian tribes under Roman rule.
122 AD - Construction of Hadrian's Wall on the northern frontier
133 AD - Julius Severus, Governor of Britannia, is sent to Palestine to fight rebels
160 to 180 AD - Marcus Aurelius, in a series of bloody and protracted wars, eventually decimated Sarmatian forces. It's also during this point in history that the first 'Sarmatian Knights', or auxilia, were moved to Britain to serve along Hadrian 's Wall.
184 AD - Lucius Artorius Castus, Roman commander of a detachment of Sarmatian conscripts stationed in Britannia, led his troops to Gaul to quell a rebellion. This is the first appearance of the name, Artorius, in history. Castus' victories in Gaul, at the head of a contingent of mounted troops, is the basis the name "Artorius" became renown to the family assigned control of Britannia.
197 AD - Clodius Albinus, Governor of Britannia, is killed by Septimius Severus, another Roman General, in battle.
208 AD - Severus repairs Hadrian's Wall
287 AD - Revolt by Carausius, commander of the Roman British fleet. He rules as emperor
293 AD - Carausius is killed by Allectus, a fellow rebel
306 AD - Constantine is proclaimed emperor at York
360 – 368 AD - Series of attacks on Britannia from the North from Woads, Scotii, and Attacotti. Roman generals intervene. This is the first instance where Woads, Scotti, Attacotti, and other tribes fight as one, the Woad Consortium. Further known only as Woad.
369 AD - Roman general Theodosius drives the Woads out of Britannia.
383 AD - Magnus Maximus (a Spaniard) is made emperor in Britannia by the Roman troops: He leads his troops to conquer Gaul, Spain, and Italy.
388 AD - Maximus occupies Rome: Theodosius has Maximus beheaded.
396 AD - Stilicho, a Roman general and the acting regent, transfers military authority from Rome to Britannia. Declares that Romans living in Britannia be called Britons (the pro-Roman party). This includes mixed marriages and its offspring.
404 AD - Britons appeal to Aetius, Roman governor of Gaul, for military assistance in their struggle against the Woad consortium. No help could be sent, at this time, as Aetius had his hands full with Attila the Hun.
405 AD - Corrupt leadership, more civil turmoil, public forgetfulness and individual apathy further erode Romano-British culture over next fifty years, making Britannia ripe for final Saxon "picking."
405 to 410 AD - Increasing Saxon unrest. Raids on towns and cities in Britannia becoming more frequent.
412 to 419 AD - Saxon chieftain, Aelle, lands on Sussex coast (southern Britannia) with his sons. Britons engage him upon landing but his superior force drives them into the forest. Over next nine years, Saxon coastal holdings are gradually expanded Sussex. Refortification of ancient hillforts.
425 AD - Saxon uprising in full-swing with occasional drives northward thru Britannia.
430 AD - Increasing Saxon settlement in Britannia. Hengest invites his son, Octha, from Germany with "16 keels" of warriors, who occupy the northern lands, to defend against the Woads.
432 – 468 AD – Roman legions and free Britons drive the Woads north of Hadrian’s Wall and the Saxons from Britannia. But even the strength of almighty Rome could not prevent the attempts of invasion on a constant basis.
437 AD - Maximus Decimus Meridius is born. He is the descendant of the Spaniard, Magnus Maximus, son to Decimus Meridius of Rome. After his father’s death (445 AD) in Rome, he is sent by his mother to Londinium in southern Britannia to begin training as a knight hoping to claim his inheritance.
437 AD - Bors is born somewhere near the northern border of Sarmatia.
439 AD – Artorius Castus born in Segontium, Britannia to a Woad mother and Roman general father. Dagonet is born in Scybi, Scythia, near the foothills of the Ural Mountains
442 AD – Arthur’s father, Uther, dies at the Battle of Ardsbury Hill in Wussex, fighting an overwhelming force of Saxons. His body is returned to Segontium for burial.
442 AD - Galahad is born in Scybi, Scythia, near the foothills of the Ural Mountains
443 AD - Lancelot is born to a former Sarmatian Knight named Benzyl and his wife, Irinyl in the lands of the Roxolani. Gawain is born in a small village on the northern quarter of the Dnieper River. His parents were killed when he was a toddler. Tristan is born in Madai, Samartia near the waters of the Black Sea
445 AD - Battle of Segontium, in which Saxons defeat Britons, but with great slaughter on both sides. This is the battle where Arthur’s mother is accidently killed by her own people. Arthur is sent to Londinium, by the local Roman Magistrate, for training as a soldier. Arthur fuels a hatred for the Woads.
445 to 448 AD - Maximus Decimus Meridius and Artorius Castus train in Londonium together and become friends but with opposing political views regarding Rome.
447 AD - Alison is born to Merlin and Aphinea
448 AD - On account of the weakening state of the Romans, the strength of the Britons was brought to a desperate pass. Under enormous pressure, Britons take matters into their own hands, expelling weak Roman officials and fighting for themselves.
449 AD - Alison is born to Merlin and Aphinea
455 AD – Arthur, age 16, is assigned to Britannia in command of the Cavalry. This is the period new Sarmatian recruits, Bors, Dagonet, Galahad, Gawain, Tristan, and Lancelot completed their training and are assigned to Arthur’s command.
460 AD - With both Roman legions withdrawing, Britannia endures devastating attacks by the Woads from the northwest and Saxons from the northeast. With no legion support, it is up to Arthur and his Sarmatian Knights to protect Roman interests. Arthur, at age 21, takes full control of pro-Roman faction and British resistance effort.
461 to 465 AD - Period of Arthur's "twelve battles" during which he gains reputation for invincibility. Excalibur is deemed by the Woads as sacred.

465 AD,Ianuarius Winter Campaign - Cerdic, Chieftain of the Saxons, and Cynric, his son, drive southward thru Calidonia toward Hadrian’s Wall. Woads are unable to stop the Saxon advancement to the south.
465 AD, Februarius - Xiomara is resurrected by Guinevere and her half-sister, Alison...
465 AD, early spring - Britons and Woads, under overall command of Arthur, battle the Saxons with a final defeat of the Saxons at the Siege Badon Hill. Following the victory at Mons Badonicus, the Saxon advance is halted with the invaders returning to their own enclaves.
466 AD, Martius, 3rd day - All Roman governmental influence has vanished in Britannia and the people are united as one nation under a Council. Arthur, age 27, is named Governor of Briton and married to Guinevere, youthful age of 17.

466 AD, September - Bandits begin to sack Briton northern villages. Xiomara get involved. Lancelot is responsible for Hadrian’s Wall and is stationed there.
466 AD, September - November - Adulterous affair between Guinevere and Lancelot.
467 AD, Ianuarius - With the coming of the New Year, Arthur demands an end to the illicit affair, mandating Lancelot to Hadrian’s Wall, and orders Guinevere to return to Merlin, who shuns her and orders her to a Christian nunnery as punishment… Arthur banned both from Camelot indefinitely. Lancelot begins to drink excessively and returns to being a womanizer. Nothing is heard from, nor about, Guinevere.
467 AD – Tis a troubled year for Arthur… his emotions are in upheaval, he is sullen and withdrawn; No longer does the Round Table hold power as it once did, considers disbanding it but rather places Sir Leon to raising and training an army and has them spreads them along Antoine and Hadrian's Walls. The other Knights are given designated territories of Briton to protect, and land to honor them.
468 AD, Beltane (1 May) - By Merlin’s persuasion and Arthur’s order, Lancelot and Guinevere are forgiven and brought back to Camelot; and Lancelot, as First Knight, is once again responsible for rebuilding the Round Table, as First Knight.
469 AD, early Ianuarius - Lancelot meets Uriell
469 AD, Martius - Arthur and Guinevere begin again to regularly see one another
470 AD, mid-summer -...
470 AD - The Goths, under Alaric, sack Rome.
470 AD, October - Arthur is crowned King of Briton reuniting the people as one nation and remarries to Guinevere.
